I think the biggest value of the articulate suite is the collaboration options allowing you to gather and respond to feedback through the content review tool and transfer courses to other people which is super helpful when people join or leave your team. It has a familiar power point feel to it, but allows you full control for complex branching, conditional actions, variables etc that can allow you to produce everything from technical simulations to fully gamified experiences. Storyline is perfect for more custom builds. Its worth mentioning, Articulate Storyline lacks the video publishing option, whereas Captivate allows you to publish projects as MP4. It is the gold standard for rapid development projects and is so easy, even SMEs can use it with no elearning background. Rise is heavily used because it is such an easy tool to learn and doesn’t require the traditional elearning expertise. The Articulate 360 suite, which includes Rise and Storyline, is the most commonly used authoring suite today. However now, Captivate is not ideal as the interface is not user-friendly, there’s plenty of screen recording options on the market, and as someone else pointed out, there’s no support for it. In my experience, Captivate had an edge for a very brief time for producing technical simulations that required screen recordings. I’ve been developing eLearning for the last 15 years. It has its drawbacks and flaws but overall it’s an excellent tool when used with great design. They release new features several times a year and bug fixes at least once a month. Storyline on the other hand has a huge Articulate-supported, very active community. They announced a huge release last fall (2021) and then missed the dates. Their user community is all but dead and they haven’t released a proper update since 2019. You should also know that Captivate has almost no support from Adobe. I almost exclusively use Storyline and Rise (among other tools) when designing and developing eLearning. If your eLearning authoring tool of choice is either Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate, you will already know that you can embed your digital content. I haven’t used Captivate for a full project in over 6 years. It’s more flexible, easier to use, and easier to make great looking courses. I’ve specialized in asynchronous eLearning for corporate clients for the past 15. I’ve been an Instructional Designer for more than 20 years.
